A 65-year-old Prince George's County man has died after escaping a fire in his home on Sunday night, fire officials said.

About 10 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were alerted to a fire in the basement of a two-story duplex in the 6600 block of 24th Place in the Lewisdale area.

When they arrived, firefighters discovered that the man and his wife had already escaped their home. The man was conscious and expressed concern for his three dogs and three cats inside the home, but he was having respiratory issues and was complaining of chest pains, officials said.

As paramedics were preparing to take the man to a hospital, he suffered cardiac arrest. He was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at the emergency room.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly, and they were able to locate all three of the dogs and two of the cats. Prince George's County Animal Control officials will keep the pets until their family is ready to claim them. The third cat is considered "missing in action," Prince George's County Fire/EMS spokesman Mark Brady said.

Fire loss is estimated at $10,000, and the fire's cause is under investigation. No one else was injured during the incident.
