A fiery head-on collision in Alexandria killed a man and injured a police officer.

About 3 a.m. Monday, a car traveling westbound on Franconia Road near Gum Street swerved to the left and struck a marked Fairfax County police cruiser, police spokesman Officer Don Gotthardt said. The car, a 2006 Infiniti, erupted into flames, and its driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer, who is 30 years old and has worked for the Fairfax County Police Department for seven years, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
