A pedestrian struck by a Metrobus in Northwest D.C. late Thursday has died.

The man was hit just before 11 p.m. on 14th Street near Parkwood Place just north of Columbia Heights by a Route 52 Metrobus, according to Metro and D.C.'s Metropolitan Police.

The man was lying in the street before he was hit, according to Metro spokesman Philip Stewart. A D.C. police officer witnessed the incident.

At the time, three riders were on the bus, which runs along 14th Street from L'Enfant Plaza to Takoma Park.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, died at a local hospital around 3 a.m. Friday. Police said his next of kin had not yet been notified.

No charges had been filed as of midday Friday. The bus operator was taken out of service to be tested for drugs and alcohol, which is standard after any Metrobus crash.

The fatality was the first fatal Metrobus crash since December 2011, when a motorist was killed after his pickup crossed into the other lane of traffic. Pedestrian fatalities are also unusual, with only a few occuring since a spate of them occurred in 2007.
