A man was shot and wounded by a Fairfax County police officer as officers were trying to serve a warrant.
Police said the 61-year-old man confronted officers with a knife when they knocked on his door at an apartment on the 5700 block of Old Mill Court in the Mount Vernon area shortly before noon on Monday. The man did not obey officers who told him to drop the weapon, and the man was shot once in the upper body, authorities said.
Police did not identify the man but said officers were trying to serve him with a destruction of property warrant.
The man is being treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Police said the details of the shooting are still being investigated. Four officers were involved and the department is still determining how many of them to place on administrative leave.
No officers were injured, said Lucy Caldwell, a Fairfax police spokeswoman.
Caldwell said other people were at the apartment during the incident, but would not say how the man was related to them.
