ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) — Howard County police say a man has died after officers who found him in his bedroom with self-inflicted stab wounds shot at him after he confronted them with a knife.
Police spokeswoman Mary Phelan says in an email that officers were called to a home in Ellicott City Wednesday afternoon for a report of a possible suicide in progress.
Phelan says two officers found 45-year-old Darren Friedman in a bedroom suffering from several serious, self-inflicted stab wounds. Phelan says when officers went into the room to help Friedman, he confronted them with a knife.
Phelan says both officers fired their weapons but police are not certain if the man was hit. Phelan says an autopsy would determine the cause of death.
Friedman was flown to a hospital where Phelan says he died.
