Man With Stolen Passport on Jet Is Asylum Seeker

A man traveling with a stolen passport on a missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner was an Iranian teenager trying to migrate to Germany, and is not believed to have any terrorist links, police said Tuesday. (March 11)

ONE OF TWO MEN TRAVELING ON A MISSING MALAYSIA JETLINER WITH A STOLEN PASSPORT WAS A 19-YEAR-OLD MAN BELIEVED TO BE TRYING TO MIGRATE TO GERMANY.

POLICE ANNOUNCED HE HAD NO TERROR LINKS ON TUESDAY.

IT IS BELIEVED THAT HE WAS PLANNING TO SEEK ASYLUM.

SOUNDBITE (English) Khalid Tan Sri, Inspector General of Police:

"We believe that he is an Iranian (white flash) We believe that he is not likely to be a member of any terrorist group. And we believe that he is trying to migrate to Germany."

POLICE SAID THE OTHER MAN TRAVELING WITH THE IRANIAN HAD ARRIVED IN MALAYSIA ON THE SAME DAY AND HAS YET TO BE IDENTIFIED.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT WAS THE FIRST CERTAIN PIECE OF NEWS IN WHAT HAS BECOME A BAFFLING MYSTERY OVER THE FATE OF FLIGHT MH370.

AUTHORITIES EXPANDED THEIR SEARCH TO THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE COUNTRY'S COAST FROM WHERE IT DISAPPEARED WITH 239 PEOPLE ON BOARD.
