The Morning Sun of Mount Pleasant reports (http://bit.ly/XzxMLn ) Saturday that Bill Caldwell, who died in June, left 85 percent of his estate to the Gratiot County city and 15 percent to the county's Commission on Aging. Officials say the money totals between $800,000 and $1 million.
The city has contributed $200,000 to its Downtown Development Authority to buy three contiguous buildings. That includes the main hardware store building and former furniture and clothing stores.
The money is expected to be used as a revolving fund, and the authority will sell or lease parts of the properties to spur future projects.
Caldwell wasn't married and had no children.
