The Fourth of July means eating meat products and lighting fireworks and, if you're an elected official, showing your face at your home district's parade. While members of Congress dutifully marched with Brownie troops and veterans groups across America Wednesday, D.C.'s own council members hit the Palisades Parade in upper Northwest in a fight to see who could pass out the best cheap trinket.
Jack Evans sprang for decent candy that reportedly was going over well with the kids, but Mary Cheh probably best captured the spirit of the day by passing out pocket-sized Constitutions (also: fruit snacks). WMATA had a big hit with the Metro bomb squad truck, which went through the parade with its bomb-removing robot.
Things were also interesting over at the Takoma Park parade, where a pair of Ann and Mitt Romney look-alikes drove a station wagon with a mock Seamus Romney atop it in a cage. Bringing a little conspiratorial element to the parade: a contingent from D.C 9/11 Truth, our own local faction of the 9/11-was-a-lie movement. According to eyewitnesses, the crowd got quiet when the truthers rolled through. No candy was distributed.
