WASHINGTON (AP) — Embattled District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray is getting a boost from the man dubbed the city's "Mayor-for-Life."

Former mayor Marion Barry will endorse Gray's re-election bid on Wednesday at a church in the ward Barry represents on the D.C. Council.

Gray faces seven challengers in the city's April 1 Democratic primary. He's been plagued by an ongoing federal investigation of corruption in his 2010 campaign. Last week, federal prosecutors said Gray knew about an illegal $668,000 slush fund that aided his 2010 bid and personally requested a large chunk of the money.

Barry told The Associated Press last week that talk of the so-called "shadow campaign" has drowned out Gray's many accomplishments. He said Gray faces a difficult road to re-election.
