BROWNSVILLE, Md. (AP) — Washington County is marking the site of the first Civil War battle action in Maryland.

A Civil War Trails marker to be unveiled Thursday in Brownsville tells the story of the clash on Maryland Heights 150 years ago.

The action on Sept. 13, 1862, was part of the Battle of Harpers Ferry. Confederate forces led by Maj. Gen. Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson won the battle by seizing the high ground at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.

Participants in the unveiling ceremony include Aliene (AH'-leen) Shields of Columbia, S.C., a direct descendant of a Confederate soldier wounded at Maryland Heights. She says another relative was killed in the battle.

The marker was funded by the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
