BOSTON (AP) — MBTA workers and their unions say the transit agency's fleet of new commuter rail cars is plagued with mechanical, engineering, and software problems.
But officials with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and the manufacturer say the problems are a normal part of introducing new, more technologically advanced cars into the system and easily addressed.
Tom Murray, president of the local chapter of the Transport Workers Union of America, tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/1mWQQNv ) that in his 40 years on the job, says he's never seen such problems.
Issues include malfunctioning doors, air conditioning, brakes, and signal software.
The MBTA paid $190 million for 75 cars, 32 of which have already been put into service.
A spokesman for contractor Hyundai Rotem says the problems have either been resolved or soon will be.
