Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office is beating back a story by Mother Jones featuring a series of recordings leaked from campaign office.

The tapes feature a discussion among campaign operatives about Ashley Judd’s weaknesses as a potential opponent to McConnell in his upcoming election. Judd has since declared that she will not run against McConnell.

“We’ve always said the Left would stop at nothing to attack Sen. McConnell, but Watergate-style tactics to bug campaign headquarters are above and beyond,” stated McConnell campaign spokesman Jesse Benton, reporting that McConnell’s office is working with the FBI to learn more about the recordings.

“Obviously a recording device of some kind was placed in Senator McConnell’s campaign office without consent,” Benton added. “By whom and how that was accomplished presumably will be the subject of a criminal investigation.”
