Meriam Ibrahim, the 27-year-old Sudanese woman sentenced to death for leaving Islam, has been freed from prison, her lawyers have confirmed.

"Meriam was released just about an hour ago," Mohanad Mustafa, one of Ibrahim’s lawyers, told AFP. “She’s now out of prison.”

Mustafa said Ibrahim has been transferred “to an unknown house to stay at for her protection and security.”

Ibrahim and her husband, Daniel Wani -- a U.S. citizen -- have been threatened in the past, Ibrahim's lawyer said. Ibrahim's own brother said she should be hanged if she did not return to Islam.

Earlier Monday, an appeals court ordered Ibrahim's release after overturning the previous ruling that she be sentenced to death.

Ibrahim was sentenced in May to hang for apostasy — the crime of leaving Islam, even though she never practiced the faith and was raised a Christian.
