WASHINGTON (AP) — Fare increases on Metro buses and trains are set to go into effect.

Fare increases begin Sunday. Rail passengers face average increases of about 5 percent, although that varies depending on distance. The base rail fare increases from $1.95 to $2.10 during rush hour. That's from 5 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

At other times, fares start at $1.70, an increase of 10 cents.

Bus fares, meanwhile, will increase by 10 cents to $1.60 for riders who use SmarTrip cards.

Riders who use paper fare cards instead of SmarTrip cars will be charged an additional $1 per trip. Previously, customers who used paper cards paid an additional 25 cents.

This is the second time in two years that Metro has raised fares.
