LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan has been awarded a federal grant aimed at reducing hunger among low-income children next summer when they don't get breakfast or lunch at school.

The state expects to receive more than $800,000 to continue a project that provides food aid with a debit-style card. Michigan hopes to provide 10,600 students with a $60 monthly stipend.

The grant also will cover another 28,000 randomly selected low-income students with $60 or $30 per month for food in various school districts, including Detroit.

The money comes from the U.S. Agriculture Department.
