WASHINGTON (AP) — Schools and governments throughout the mid-Atlantic region are taking another snow day and authorities are urging people to stay off treacherous roads as rain turns to ice and snow.

The federal government is closed Monday and Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia governments are also closed. Several transit agencies have canceled bus service, but Metrorail is running. Area airports are seeing many cancelations.

The National Weather Service is expecting 6 inches to 8 inches of snow in most of the region, but up to 10 inches south of Washington and in parts of the Eastern Shore and Delaware.

Maryland highway officials say crews are already seeing enough snow to plow. While they've seen few incidents so far, officials say some motorists are traveling too fast for conditions.
