MOSELLE, Miss. (AP) — Southern Hens Inc. has been cited by the government for 43 safety and health violations following the death of a worker in 2012.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says in a news release that it has proposed penalties of $160,000. The poultry company has 15 days to appeal.

OSHA says it initiated an inspection Sept. 9, 2012, after a worker slipped and fell into an unguarded screw conveyor while cleaning the conveyor at the company's Moselle facility in Jones County.

OSHA says the violations included failing to provide personal protective equipment for employees, to identify mechanical hazards in the offal pits before employees entering, to provide training for employees entering offal pits and to develop energy control procedures for augers, chillers, scalders, cookers and dumpers.
