D.C. police are asking the public for help in locating a missing 6-year-old girl.

Eriona Birts was last seen on Thursday at about 6 p.m. at her home on the 2000 block of E Street NE, police said. Her home is in the Kingman Park area and is not far from Benning Road, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and the Anacostia River.

Police believe Eriona is with her mother, who is not supposed to have custody of her. Authorities believe the mother and daughter have left the Washington metropolitan area.

Eriona is considered to be a critical missing person, police said.

"We are concerned because she is away from her father and she is not in school," said D.C. police spokeswoman Gwendolyn Crump.

Eriona is described as a black female with a medium complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing purple pants, a purple jacket and silver boots.

Anyone with information about Eriona's whereabouts can call the Metropolitan Police Department's Youth Investigations Division at 202-576-6768. They can also reach police by calling 202-727-9099 or 911.
