Barbara Doherty, whose son died in the terrorist attack on the U.S. Embassy in Libya, described the assault as a “little bump in the road” towards freedom in that country.
“Those people, not only there, but other places, are under horrid dictatorships,” Doherty told the Boston Herald when asked about President Obama’s comments on the issue. “They’re very angry. They’re poor. It is a little bump in the road. They are making progress. You can’t expect it to happen in one night. Progress is slow.” Her son, Glen, was one of the former Navy Seals who died while trying to protect U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was also killed.
Obama used the same language in his discussion of the attack “I was pretty certain and continue to be pretty certain that there are going to be bumps in the road,” Obama said.
Romney faulted Obama for that remark. “We had an ambassador assassinated,” he said. “[T]wenty thousand people have been killed in Syria. We have tumult in Pakistan and of course Iran is that much closer to having the capacity to build a nuclear weapon. These are not bumps in the road, these are human lives.”
Mrs. Doherty’s concurrence might provide Obama some cover on that issue.
