Police believe that the person or persons responsible for a string of mail thefts in Montgomery County may be driving a gray sedan-like vehicle.

The thefts have occurred throughout Montgomery County since October. The thief or thieves have been stealing mail from mailboxes, removing checks from the mail, altering the checks and cashing or attempting to cash them, county police said.

The gray car has been seen near several of the theft sites.

Police recommend that citizens drop important outgoing mail at local post offices or in U.S. Postal Service mailboxes. They also encourage people not to use the flags on their mailboxes when they have outgoing mail.

Citizens should report any suspicious situations, vehicles and people by calling 911 or the police non-emergency line, 301-279-8000.
