ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) — The Montgomery County Council is considering a measure that would authorize an existing tax to be used to pay for bike-docking stations.

A bill that would allow transportation impact taxes to pay for the station was introduced Tuesday. The tax is currently assessed on new residential and commercial buildings and used to help pay for transportation projects, but that doesn't currently include the bike stations. Another bill that would allow developers to get county permits for docking stations more quickly and cheaply was also introduced.

County officials are hoping to build a system of 350 bikes and 50 stations by next year. The initial cost of the project is estimated at over $2 million, $1.5 million of which the county has secured.
