Montgomery pushes afterschool programs

Montgomery County will join organizations and landmarks from across the country on Thursday for "Lights on Afterschool," a nationwide rally touting afterschool programs. The county will showcase its new "Excel Beyond the Bell" afterschool programs, which include professional development training for youth workers, hot supper and transportation. Nationwide, a million people are expected to participate in 7,500 events across the U.S. Landmarks will be lit, including Mount Rushmore and the Empire State Building. Parents are invited to visit four Montgomery County schools over the week: Strathmore Elementary and Loierdeman Middle on Thursday, Argyle Middle on Monday, and Roberto Clemento Middle on Oct. 27.
