The Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee this afternoon will examine President Obama's pick to be the head of the embattled department. Robert McDonald, tapped as President Obama's choice to replace Eric Shinseki, will field questions from Senate lawmakers this afternoon. McDonald is tasked with fixing an agency plagued with problems including a disability claims backlog and accountability issues.

President Obama today will introduce the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014 before heading to the West Coast for a host of fundraisers. The president will be in Seattle, Washington and northern California where he will remain overnight.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee will launch a $500,000 ad buy today in Iowa against GOP candidate Joni Ernst. Ernst, who is challenging Rep. Bruce Braley for Iowa's Senate seat, is currently tied with her Democratic challenger at 43 percent, according to an NBC/Marist poll released last week.
