California Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy became the new House majority leader Thursday following a secret election on Capitol Hill. McCarthy, the current majority whip, succeeds Eric Cantor as leader after Cantor's primary defeat earlier this month. Congressman Steve Scalise, R-La., was elected majority whip.

President Obama has confirmed the United States will send up to 300 military advisors to Iraq in an attempt to diffuse the ongoing tensions sweeping the country. At a press briefing at the White House Thursday, Obama confirmed the advisers and added the possibility of targeted air strikes remains an option. Secretary of State John Kerry will head to the Middle East this weekend in an attempt to broker peace talks.
