A Capitol Heights woman who claimed Sunday that her three children were abducted has been charged with making a false statement to authorities, Prince George's County police said.

Deborah Fashakin, 33, apparently claimed her children were taken in hopes of getting a faster police response to her stolen car report, police said.

Fashakin told authorities Sunday night that she was pumping gas in Seat Pleasant when someone jumped into her black Nissan Altima and drove off with her children inside. An AMBER alert was issued for the children.

The woman's car was found later Sunday night in the District. The children, ages 5 and under, were not in the car. Prince George's County police said the children were never in harm's way, but did not elaborate.

Fashakin was released after posting a $5,000 bond.
