Now that NASA is no longer sending Americans into space, what has the agency been up to?

Well, a new NASA Goddard Space Flight Center-funded study warns that unless the civilized world changes their ways, it faces collapse.

The Guardian reports that the study warns of growing economic inequality between elites vs. the masses, thanks to the overconsumption of resources.

"[T]he Elites eventually consume too much, resulting in a famine among Commoners that eventually causes the collapse of society," the report notes.

Elites should reduce their consumption of resources and focus on reducing population growth.

"Collapse can be avoided and population can reach equilibrium if the per capita rate of depletion of nature is reduced to a sustainable level, and if resources are distributed in a reasonably equitable fashion," the study reports.

The study uses the 'Human And Nature DYnamical' (HANDY) model, led by applied mathematician Safa Motesharrei of the U.S. National Science Foundation-supported National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center.
