DENALI NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE, Alaska (AP) — The National Park Service has approved a plan that calls for a daily limit of 160 vehicles on the wilderness stretch of the Denali Park Road.

The plan is intended to guide management decisions involving vehicles for the next 20 years.

Denali National Park and Preserve has had daily limits for buses but not for other vehicles traveling the controlled portion of the 92-mile road, past mile 15.

The prior seasonal cap of 10,512 vehicles had been in place since 1986, but park spokeswoman Kris Fister says it wasn't based on any scientific study.

Fister says years of study and research serve as an underpinning for the new plan.

Much of the plan isn't expected to be implemented until 2015, when a new bus contract starts.
