Montgomery County Councilwoman Nancy Navarro was voted council president for the next year and Craig Rice vice president.

Council members voted unanimously for both at their Tuesday morning meeting.

Navarro, D-Eastern County, said as council president she wants to focus on creating quality education for Montgomery County students, attract more businesses to the county and improve efficiency in government agencies. WIth budget constraints, she realizes there will be cuts, however she wants to work to make "one Montgomery."

"We cannot provide a good education or a good safety net without a strong economy," she said.

Navarro has served on the council since 2009, and previously was on the Montgomery County school board, serving as president in 2006 and 2008.

Rice, D-Upper County, has served on the council since 2010, and was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2006 before joining the council.
