Navy freshman quarterback Rafi Montalvo was seriously injured as a passenger in a single-car accident on Thanksgiving night in Miami and is in a medically-induced coma. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident, which was first reported by the Annapolis Capital.

According to Navy athletics spokesman Scott Strasemeier, Montalvo’s condition was improving on Sunday. According to the Capital, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo flew to Miami on Saturday to comfort the family. Attempts to reach Niumatalolo were unsuccessful.

Montalvo is third on the depth chart, recently replacing injured sophomore John Hendrick. He played last year at the Naval Academy Prep School.
