< p>SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Navy says it has relieved a commanding officer accused of mismanagement amid allegations that funds were misused under his watch.

Navy spokesman Chris Johnson said Thursday the decision to relieve Capt. Michael Wiegand stems from an investigation into contracting improprieties at Southwest Regional Maintenance Center in San Diego.

The center provides maintenance support to more than 100 ships and submarines of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Wiegand took command in July 2010.

The Navy has assigned Wiegand to administrative duty.

The center will be under an acting commander until a relieving commanding officer is assigned.

Johnson says the alleged wrongdoings did not impact the command's ability to provide maintenance support.

The spokesman says he cannot provide further details at this stage of the investigation nor allow for interviews of Wiegand.
