In their fourth NCAA appearance, the Hoyas (18-3-2) have reached the elite eight for the first time, eliminating Syracuse in the round of 16 on penalty kicks. Georgetown is led by junior forward and MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist Steve Neumann (seven goals, 12 assists), freshman forward Brandon Allen (15 goals) and sophomore goalkeeper Tomas Gomez, a member of the U.S. youth national team pool. The West Coast Conference champion Toreros (14-8) have come from behind in each of their three NCAA tournament matches.

A rivalry is budding just as the Cardinals (14-5-1) get set to replace the Terrapins (19-1-2) in the ACC. Louisville topped Maryland 4-2 in last year's NCAA third round, and the Terps got revenge with a 3-0 win in the teams' 2012 season opener. Maryland is in the quarterfinals for the fourth time in five seasons in large part because of junior forward Patrick Mullins (15 goals, eight assists), the ACC offensive player of the year and a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist.
