LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Experts say Nebraska ranchers should consider having their cattle graze on cornstalks this fall to conserve hay and pastures during the drought.

This is especially important this year because nearly all of Nebraska's pastures are in poor condition and hay is expensive.

Nebraska Corn Board member Jon Holzfaster says ranchers may be able to work with corn farmers and arrange to let their cattle graze on the cornstalks left after harvest.

Nebraska Cattlemen President Jim Ramm says cornstalk residue can be a good feed for cattle when it's used properly. And using cornstalks will help preserve hay for the winter.
