Conservatives say that the Romney campaign's statements on gays in the Boy Scouts and Chick-fil-A's opposition to same sex marriage have erected a new hurdle to their full embrace of the GOP presidential candidate.

"We have got to do something about this, fix it," said a key GOP official.

At issue: Romney's support for the Boy Scouts to set their own rules, including barring gays from membership and leadership positions, while also wishing for "all people...regardless of their sexual orientation" to participate. He also recently ducked a question about Chick-fil-A.

Conservatives, already lukewarm about Romney, said the comments are too weak on the gay marriage and Boy Scouts issue. "Both of those positions are going to need a lot of work to get some clarity and get conservative voters comfortable," said a campaign advisor.

The campaign, however, said that Romney has not changed his position on the Scouts in a decade and that he didn't talk more about Chick-fil-A because the question was also larded down with other issues he wanted to avoid.
