A Latino civil rights group says a redistricting plan by New Mexico's largest school district is leaving some Latino parents without proper representation.

Ralph Arellanes, state director of the New Mexico League of United Latin American Citizens, says the redistricting map by Albuquerque Public Schools failed to give the city's West Side another representative. That area has seen the most growth over the last decade, and many of the new residents are Latino.

He said the plan, approved by the APS school board last week, also packs Latinos into one district and will dilute their representation on the board.

The school board's plan also has angered West Side advocates and has renewed calls to split the district.
