Cranston school officials are asking the Rhode Island state for permission to place advertisements on the sides of school buses.

School officials say the proposal could raise badly needed revenue for the district, which has had to cut music and sports programs to eliminate budget deficits.

A state legislative committee reviewed the proposal on Wednesday at the Statehouse. If lawmakers endorse it, the legislation would allow any school district to sell space on their buses.

Rough estimates indicate the Cranston school district could raise $75,000 annually by putting ads on the 90-bus fleet.

Seven states currently allow districts to place advertisements on the sides of school buses.

The General Assembly has not scheduled a vote on the measure.
