Sen. Ken Winters, the former Campbellsville University president who turned to state politics in his retirement, has announced he won't seek another term in the Senate.
The 77-year-old Winters cited health issues his wife, Shirley, is facing for his decision.
Winters, a Murray Republican who chairs the Senate Education Committee, has served western Kentucky's 1st District for the past eight years.
In a statement, Winters said when he agreed to run for the Senate seat, he and his wife were in relatively good health. He said that health issues "have become a major obstacle."
Democrat Carroll Hubbard, a former U.S. congressman from Mayfield, and Republican Stan Humphries have filed to run for Winters' seat.
