Parents, spouses or friends could have the power to take control of a loved one's social media accounts if the person dies, under a bill set for a hearing in the Nebraska Legislature.

The measure by Lexington Sen. John Wightman would apply to Facebook, Twitter, email and other online accounts. Wightman will present the bill Wednesday to the Legislature's Judiciary Committee.

His proposal (LB783) would allow a deceased person's personal representative to continue operating or close the accounts. It would not apply if a judge orders otherwise, or if the person expresses a contrary wish through a will.
