A South Dakota House committee has postponed consideration of a proposal of a "hope card," which would expedite the process of checking to see if a protective order is on file.

A hope card would measure about the size of a credit card and would include the respondent's identity and details such as the order's issue and expiration dates, the case number and the issuing court and county.

The card would cost a few dollars, and each person covered by the order could receive one.

They would not, however, replace valid protection orders,

At least 4,500 South Dakotans file for a protective order each year.

The House Judiciary committee will likely consider the bill on Wednesday after running out of time Monday.
