A domestic violence agency in northwest Washington is closing and staff members are working to quickly replace services for clients.
The Washington Empowered Against Violence said this week that it will close on Friday. It attributed the move to difficult economic times. However, The Washington Post reports that city officials and one of the agency's co-founders said the agency was closing after losing two major grants because of concerns about possible mismanagement of the funds (http://tinyurl.com/7vmo8tj).
Fernando Laguarda, chairman of the agency's board of directors, said the 12-member staff has been working to place clients with other agencies in the area.
The agency, at 14th and K streets, has been providing legal and counseling services to domestic violence victims since 1997.
