Maryland State Police say a suspect in a lawn tractor theft was killed when he was ejected from the back of a pickup truck while fleeing.

Troopers say about 4:30 p.m. Monday, five people put a lawn tractor on the back of a pickup at Lowe's in North East. An employee closed a fence to prevent the thieves from leaving. The truck rammed the gate and got through, but the tractor fell off.

Troopers say there were four suspects in the truck cab and a fifth in the back. That man, 35-year-old David Roland of Elkton, was thrown from the back when the truck hit a car driven by 34-year-old Stephen Kiszenia of Chesapeake City.

Roland was pronounced dead at Christiana Hospital. Kiszenia was treated and released at Union Hospital.
