British Prime Minister David Cameron said that he still doesn’t know what exactly happened with the apparent car bombing that coincided with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta’s trip to a British outpost in Afghanistan, but the government’s would do whatever was necessary to secure the base.

“Very early — details are still coming through,” Cameron said during a joint press conference today at the White House, adding that there is an investigation underway. He also said that the British and American governments would do whatever necessary for the “security of our people and our troops.”

Early reports indicate that a suicide car bomber drove onto the runway as Panetta was landing and detonated a bomb. It is not clear if Panetta’s plane was the target.
