Norquist blesses future Aaron Schock run for governor

Rep. Aaron Schock, R-Ill., perhaps the only member of the House who can give Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., a run for his money in a sit-ups contest, addressed rumors of him running for governor of Illinois in 2014 during an appearance on ABC earlier this month. Schock said he hasn't made up his mind, but people are looking for "something different" after having four of their last six governors go to jail.

"Somebody new, somebody younger, somebody honest," he said. "I think I fit those bills."

GOP types have had mixed reactions to the speculation. Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady called his future "unlimited," while the conservative Club for Growth recently told the Washington Times that Schock is an "awful way to re-energize the GOP."

But Grover Norquist is all for a Schock gubernatorial run. "Illinois needs a serious low-tax guy," he told Yeas & Nays. "Schock is one."

The only downside to a Schock governorship, in Norquist's mind, is that he'd no longer have the fun of kicking Illinois around as an example of "how the world works poorly when it's run by big government."

"We could still make fun of California," Norquist said.
