A 24-year-old American tourist was detained in North Korea for what officials in the secretive state on Friday called "a gross violation of its legal order.'' The man allegedly tore his visa to pieces on entering the country and said that he had chosen it as a place of "shelter," according to the state-run KCNA news agency. The State Department said Friday it is aware of the media reports that a U.S. citizen has been detained in North Korea, but that they had “no additional information to share.” State Department spokesperson Jen Psaki said the U.S. has been in touch with the Swedish Embassy which represents American interests in North Korea.
