During an appearance on CBS Face the Nation, David Keene, the president of the National Rifle Association, took time to explain to host Bob Schieffer how a semi-automatic rifle worked.

As Schieffer questioned how the NRA could continue to oppose a ban on “military-style assault weapons,” Keene explained that they were simply citizen-owned semi-automatic rifles.

“How many rounds can these weapons discharge, say, in five seconds?” Schieffer asked defensively.

“Well, they fire when you put trigger,” Keene responded.

“Sure,” added Schieffer. “And they keep firing.”

“They don’t keep firing,” Keene explained patiently. “That’s a fully automatic weapon. These are not fully automatic weapons.”

“But these are dangerous,” Schieffer insisted.
