NWS: Large storm sweeps through Va.

WAKEFIELD, Va. (AP) — The National Weather Service says a large storm is bringing heavy rain and the threat of tornadoes and floods to Virginia.

Meteorologist John Billet with the weather service in Wakefield says the storm system stretched Wednesday afternoon from the Gulf Coast into southern Pennsylvania. Much of central and southeastern Virginia was under tornado and flood watches.

Flood warnings were already in effect for parts of the James, Appomattox and Rivanna rivers in central Virginia. Billet says flooding is expected to Wednesday night into Thursday, possibly forcing the closure of some roads. But he says the main concern was the possible development of tornadoes.
