NEW YORK (AP) — Techies plan to gather in New York City for a 12-hour hackathon to develop disaster-relief apps.

The event is planned for Saturday in Chelsea and is sponsored by executives from software development agencies.

Participants will pitch ideas and form teams to develop apps that will help communities with future disaster-relief efforts.

The software developers say Superstorm Sandy spurred them to act.

The winners will be selected Saturday night.
