Capitals coach Adam Oates confirmed on Monday that forward Brooks Laich underwent sports hernia surgery earlier this month. There is still no timeline for Laich to begin skating again.

Laich has played in just nine games this season after sustaining the original groin injury while playing in Switzerland during the NHL lockout. He was re-injured on April 4 and met with a pair of specialists before conceding to surgery.

“I think it’s probably good for him. That the Knute Rockne doesn’t work,” Oates said. “Your body was letting you down and we finally made a decision and now it’s time to move forward. I think it’s probably clear in his mind now because the unknown is tough.”

On Saturday, Caps general manager George McPhee told reporters the team hoped Laich would be back for the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs – if they make it past the New York Rangers in the first round, of course.
