President Obama argued today that the job creation numbers announced today show that the economy has taken “a step in the right direction,” even as the national unemployment rate remained at 8.2 percent.

“We learned this morning that our businesses created 84,000 new jobs last month and that overall means that businesses have created 4.4 million new jobs over the past 28 months, including 500,000 new manufacturing jobs,” Obama said in Ohio today. “That’s a step in the right direction. That’s a step in the right direction.”

The unemployment rate had fallen to 8.1 percent two months ago, but those gains were lost in May and not regained in June. The unemployment rate has been above eight percent for 41 months.
