President Obama dismissed questions about the editing of the Benghazi talking points as a “sideshow” driven by political animosity from Republicans, who, he noted, have raised money off the issue.

“The whole issue of talking points, frankly, throughout this process has been a sideshow,” Obama said during a joint press briefing with British Prime Minister David Cameron. “Nobody understood exactly hat was takking place oiver the course of those first few days.”

Obama pointed out that the director of National Intelligence told Congress that terrorists were behind the attack on September 19, three days after U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice described the attack as a “spontaneous” assault.

“Who executes some sort of coverup or effort to tamp things down for three days?” Obama asked. “So the whole thing defies logic and the fact that this thing gets churned out, frankly, has a lot to do with political motivations.”

Obama added that Republicans have “used [Benghazi] for fundraising and, frankly, if anybody out there wants to actually focus on how we make sure something like this does not happen again, I am happy to listen.”
