Joe Biden is an “outstanding” Vice President, President Obama said today in his remarks at the signing of the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization.

Biden helped author the original legislation as a senator from Delaware almost 20 years ago, and has more recently been the face of the administration’s campaign to tighten gun laws. Biden is also well-known for committing gaffes during public events, such as confusing countries and telling people to “just fire the shotgun through the door.”

Obama applauded Biden for his efforts to protect women:

President Obama: Finally, I want to thank Joe Biden for being such an outstanding Vice President.  (Applause.)  That’s right, you can stand for Joe.  Stand for Joe.  Give it up for Joe Biden. Joe is a hardworking Vice President.

Audience:  Yes, he is!

President Obama:  And he told me when he agreed — when I asked him to be Vice President, he said, well, I don’t want to just be sitting around. I said, I promise you I won’t let you just sit around.  And he has not.  He has played a key role in forging the gun safety reforms that I talked about, largely by working closely with survivors of gun violence and their families.  He forged the Violence Against Women Act 20 years ago — never forgetting who it was all about.
